How you can support a Dementia Friendly Bronx

What Is Dementia Friends New York (DFNY)?

Dementia Friends New York is a statewide movement launched by PSS, designed to educate New Yorkers about dementia and reduce stigma through simple, community-based actions.

Originally created by the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK and administered by Dementia Friends USA, the DFNY program centers on a one-hour, interactive Information Session that teaches:

  • What dementia is and how it affects people
  • Five key messages everyone should know
  • How to take easy, practical steps to support people living with dementia

Why the Bronx?

The Bronx has:

  • The highest rate of Alzheimer’s in New York State (16.6% of adults 65+)
  • One of the fastest-growing 85+ populations in the state
  • A richly diverse community – over 75% identify as Latino or African American, both groups facing elevated dementia risk

Despite these challenges, dementia awareness and resources remain low. Through this campaign, we are changing that.

Campaign Goal

🎯 Train 50 Community Champions who will deliver DFNY Information Sessions across the Bronx
📣 Reach at least 1,250 new Dementia Friends by the end of 2025
